New Publication Identification of high emitting heavy duty vehicles using Plume Chasing

Real-world emissions and enforcement insights from about 5000 European heavy-duty vehicles (2016–2023)

Christina Schmidt and coworkers use the Plume Chasing method to measure NOx, particle, and black carbon emissions of nearly 5000 HDVs across Europe. Rapid on-road screening identified high emitters linked to tampering, system defects, or cold SCR, supporting targeted inspections. Emission levels varied strongly by country and year, with 4–14 % of vehicles responsible for half of particulate emissions.
