
Atmospheric interfaces: Scalable spectroscopy and process-based simulations
We study physical and chemical processes at the interface of the atmosphere with different surface environments, such as the biosphere and volcanic systems. We ask how the state of these environments is imprinted on measurable atmospheric signals. For instance: How is sun-induced plant fluorescence related to atmospheric carbon fluxes and plant stress? How is the volcanic plume composition influenced by chemistry and related to volcanic activity? To this end, we develop targeted and scalable spectroscopic instruments and process-based models to overcome key observational limitations and advance our mechanistic understanding of the Earth system.
