The presentation will summarize the previous and recent activities in nuclear forensics in European Commission JRC-Karlsruhe. The Institute is working in this field for more than 30 years analysing illicit uranium or plutonium materials in the EU in order to identify the material in question: to find out the intended use, the risk associated with the sample, the last legal owner and the origin of the material.

During the presentation the measurement and role of elemental data, high precision isotope studies (U, Pu, Th, Sr, Pb, S) and age dating (production date) will be highlighted within the other sample characteristics used for origin assessment.
