Groundwater contamination by nitrate continues to pose a risk to groundwater resources worldwide. The CRC CAMPOS (“Catchments as Reactors”) at the University of Tübingen, aimed to identify the most relevant locations and processes within catchments that control turnover of nitrate or other aquatic pollutants. The main research questions investigated include:
- What is the impact of hydrological processes on the cycling of N compounds in the groundwater-stream transition zone of lower-order streams?
- Where and how does slow denitrification in deep fractured groundwater systems take place and what are the rate-limiting factors?
