Measurement campaign COMET 3.0 – Tropics – HALO Aircraft deployed in Brazil

A team from IUP’s atmosphere group is currently operating out of Cuiaba, Brazil, where the HALO research aircraft has been deployed in the context of the COMET 3.0 – Tropics campaign.

Led by the German Aerospace Center (DLR), the aircraft will conduct various sorties throughout August 2026 to sample greenhouse gases and other pollutants in the atmosphere. The goal is to better understand source and sink patterns such as in the Pantanal wetland area and in the Amazon forest. Further, mechanisms related to photochemical processing such as in wildfire plumes will be assessed. The Heidelberg team will operate their DOAS spectrometer with a particular focus on wildfire emissions and chemical processing.
