Research

The main research of the former research unit of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences "Dating of water and Sediments" is the dating and the interpretation of marine and continental climate archives.


In the DFG research group DAPHNE we study natural climate change and processes related to carbonate precipitation in various cave environments. One major aspect is modeling of processes related to carbonate precipitation in the cave environment and climate modeling on the basis of proxy records from stalagmite archives. Besides the speleothem research in the framework of DAPHNE we study in cooperation with different working groups stalagmites from different places in the world. E.g. from India and Puerto Rico.


In the marine realm we study different archives and proxys. Deep sea corals are investigated as archives of ocean circulation changes. The growth rate of hydrogenic Mn-crusts is supposed to be linked to climate. Within a Master thesis a Mn-crust from the equatorial Pacific is studied. Dating of biogenic and abiogenic carbonates is performed in our TIMS-Lab (contact).

Ongoing projects

 

Reconstruction of tropical rainfall variability in the Caribbean during the last glacial period (115,000 - 12,000 ka)

Within the DFG SPP INTERDYNAMIK project CaribClim we have reconstructed past precipitation variability in the Caribbean during the last 12.5 ka using speleothems from Cuba (PhD thesis C. Fensterer, Heidelberg, 2011). In 2012, we started a new project to analyse Caribbean stalagmites, which grew during the Last Glacial period from Cuba and Puerto Rico.
The tropical hydrological cycle plays a key role in regulating global climate, in particular through the export of heat and moisture to higher latitudes. The Caribbean is located in a region, which is both directly and indirectly influenced by several large-scale climate patterns, like the Atlantic Multi-Decadal Oscillation (AMO), El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). Rainfall variability in the Caribbean is largely dependent on the position of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), which is influenced not only by seasonal insolation but also by inter-hemispheric spatial gradients in SST. Thus, our sample sites in Puerto Rico and Cuba are very sensitive to changes in the position and strength of the ITCZ due to their position at the northernmost boundary of the ITCZ.
The aim of this study is to reconstruct precipitation variability from Caribbean speleothems for the Last Glacial period, based on a precise age model. We want to establish a precisely dated record of wet periods in the Caribbean during the glacial period between 115ka and 11ka BP and relate the timing of glacial wet phases in Puerto Rico and Cuba to supra-regional climate patterns. Analysis of various proxies like stable isotopes or trace elements in high resolution intends to reconstruct decadal to centennial scale climate variability during glacial wet phases.

Speleothem δ18O and δ13C values have been identified as high valuable palaeoclimate proxies (McDermott, 2004). However, both proxies pass through a cascade of processes which are changing the original signal until, finally, the oxygen and carbon isotopes are incorporated into the calcite (Lachniet, 2009; McDermott, 2004). The first detailed theoretical approach to study the effect of these processes on speleothem δ18O and δ13C values has been presented by C.H. Hendy in 1971 (Hendy, 1971). Within the framework of daphne several models has been developed for a deeper understanding of the influence of the diverse processes (e.g. evapotranspiration at the boundary between the free atmosphere and the soil zone, open/closed soil/karst-system, evaporation of the fluid layer on top of the stalagmite, oxygen isotope buffering of hydrogen carbonate (HCO3-) by the oxygen isotope exchange between H2O and HCO3-) affecting speleothem δ18O and δ13C values (Deininger et al., accepted; Fohlmeister et al., 2011; Mühlinghaus et al., 2007, 2009; Scholz et al., 2009; Wackerbarth et al., 2010). This theoretical work is essential to understand the force of climate parameter (e.g. temperature, amount of precipitation) on speleothem δ18O and δ13C values.

The ISOLUTION-model (Deininger et al., accepted) covers the last part of the before mentioned cascade of processes, the isotope fractionation effects which occur to the dissolved species in the solution layer on top of a speleothem (i.e. H2O, HCO3-) – H2O and HCO3- are the most common species in natural cave drip waters (pH 8). The ISOLUTION-model bases on a Rayleigh-approach that has been constantly improved over the years (Mühlinghaus et al., 2007, 2009; Scholz et al, 2009) and accounts for isotope fractionation effects that occur during and because of precipitation of CaCO3.

Teleconnection of Speleothem Climate-Proxy Time Series

Speleothems have been shown to be valuable climate archives. Mass spectrometric methods enable absolute dating of speleothems at very high precision using U-series disequilibrium methods (Hellstrom, 2006; Hoffmann, 2008; Hoffmann et al., 2009; Richards and Dorale, 2003; Scholz and Hoffmann, 2008). Furthermore, the recorded stable isotope (δ18O and δ13C) time series are considered as unique continental palaeo-climate records (Lachniet, 2009; McDermott, 2004) and have provided new insights into past climate dynamics. McDermott et al. (2011) have shown that along the central European transect, from the west to the east, the δ18O values of precipitation following a linear relation, with higher values in the west and lower values in east; this observation is also known as continental effect and has been first described by Dansgaard (1964). They also showed that this slope is preserved by speleothem δ18O values along the inner continental transect, excluding speleothems from high altitudes and the Mediterranean, because of the altitude effect and source effect, respectively. These results emphasise the teleconnection of speleothem δ18O time series. However, McDermott et al. (2011) analysed only speleothem δ18O values in 1000 year steps. The scope of the new teleconnection study is, to show if this teleconnection over Europe is also preserved on smaller time scales and to identify possible processes which may change the teleconnection pattern.

Summer School on Speleothem Science
Heidelberg, July 29 - August 2, 2013

A group of 20 PhD students who work with speleothems have kept in touch over the past one and a half years with a shared idea: to hold a Summer-School on speleothem research aimed at other PhD students and/or undergraduates that are interested in this field of research. During the 4th DAPHNE-workshop in Heidelberg last February, we decided that it would be great to hold the Summer-School in Summer 2013. The Summer-School is aimed mainly at Masters and PhD students, but also at young researchers interested in the topic. It will cover several fields of speleothem science. Thanks to the efforts of some of us, the Summer-School will take place from July 29 to August 2, 2013 in Heidelberg, Germany.
